Peter Epstein Quartet
quartet
Led by acclaimed alto and soprano saxophonist Peter Epstein, the Peter Epstein Quartet is a dynamic contemporary jazz ensemble renowned for its seamless integration of avant-garde improvisation, post-bop traditions, and global musical elements. Initially formed in New York City with early iterations featuring innovative downtown players like Jim Black and Jamie Saft, the group has evolved over decades across various configurations to continually push the boundaries of modern jazz. Notably, the band's critically acclaimed album Polarities (Songlines Recordings) featured long-time collaborator Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Sam Minaie on bass, and Mark Ferber on drums, showcasing an intuitive, ESP-like communication that shifts effortlessly from subtle introspection to roaring ferocity. Anchored by Epstein’s lyrical voice and vision as a veteran educator—currently heading the jazz program at the University of Nevada, Reno—the quartet balances tight compositional architecture with expansive, free-flowing sonic exploration.
