The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra (RYJO), founded in 2006 by Vernon and Karen Scarbrough, celebrated its tenth anniversary with the release of its debut album, Decade, recorded at Tanglewood Productions and led by then-music director Doug Coomler. Initially released digitally in November 2016 and later on CD in 2021 via A.W. Tonegold Records, the album features standout tracks such as The Heat's On, El Cayuco, and a tribute suite to Dan Naylor. Now in its 19th season under the direction of Nicole Hegland, the organization continues to cultivate young talent across the Truckee Meadows area by operating two separate ensembles for middle and high school musicians.
